Hey all, I have NT server on a HP Netserver LC3 PII, and recently it hung, I dont know why, (the Event Viewer wont tell my why either), and I had to shut it down, then it wouldn't start up again.....Id press the power button and then fans, processor etc would start, but nothing on screen, or no lights on the keyboard even after pressing Caps Lock etc...
Id keep trying but get same results. Testing the mother board, I took out all the RAM and I got the beeps telling me the RAM was out...Mother board OK..??..(Its defenitly not the video card acting up!!!)
Eventually after I left it for 5 mins it started up....and all seems to be ok...
So about 3 days later the CPU started to run at 100%, because of one service, SNMP, and SNMP.exe in the processes was 100%. Not knowing what it was I stopped it and another service started to run at 100% asrsrvc.exe, so I stopped that and then another took over..this kept happening...(and I notice now that they all should not be taking up any usage at all)....evenentually the system hung again and wouldnt start up again for about 5mins.....
Does anyone know whats wrong here...????
Everything seems to be ok now, but Im sure it will happen again...I was going to get a HP Engineer out to replace the mother board, but is that the problem....
I think it might be the processor over heating from all the 100% usages....??????

thanks for reading all that!!!!
look forward to replys!

Are you running any software which utilises the SNMP service....???? Is it always this service which is first to use 100%CPU....????

Have you looked at the network card.....???? It could be that SNMP is trying to write/read from the network and is unable to do so......????

best to put the SNMP service on manual or disactivated... - watch out what other services it wants to stop first though :)

Air con in the server room OK? what is the alarm/auto shutdown temperature set to in the server setup?

Thanks guys,

Yea I was goin to disable the SNMP service, but I dont know what its for, does any one know????
I have a feeling its for their mail, they are using MDeamon for mail, no exchange or anything, and at the moment the service is running at 0% so I didnt want to stop it.

Im thinking that the processor is over heating, its only a PII, and there were allot of services requiring 100% at that time, so maybe when it was shut down it was too hot to start. The air con in the room is not the best, the server is sitting under a desk with about 1 foot from the top to the table roof. But I have it out on its own hoping that this will have a good effect.

I dont know if the SNMP service is always first to go to 100%, I only noticed the services after the second boot, and they are ok now...what relation has this service to the network card, if any...???? If I knew what the service was for I could have a better chance of preventing it happening again...

SNMP is Simple Network Management Protocol. For troubleshooting purposes it can be shut down with no penalty, and if you have no monitoring systems that rely on the SNMP data you can leave it off if you want to.
