Hey folks;

I have about 100 6.5 boxes scattered around the UK currently running SP1. I want to roll out SP5 (Maybe 6 as I see that's just come out).

I was planning on updating the server with the master replica of the root partition on it first and then other servers with a R/W of root (these boxes are all in a central location) and then work my way around the rest of the servers.

Does this sound like a logical approach??

don't do sp6 on that large of scale.. way too premature.

use SP5 and there are a couple of post sp5 patches... use them and you should be fine.. regarding the any servers, master of root -- thats fine to do first but not absolutely required. however with that many servers, i'm assuming that it's a replica server only so the impact to users is minimal. that makes it a great place to start.

also.... if you have IPX on your network, you will have problems with NMAS unless you also apply a security services update. right now i believe the current version is SSP203 and can be located at download.novell.com. its not a patch, its a product update.

Thanks Marvhuffaker

I figured it was too early to do SP6, I just happened to see it on the downloads list yesterday and thought 'maybe'.

You are correct about the root box being a replica server as are the other boxes with a R/W of root, thats their job and they do it very well :) so thats where I'll start.

We do still use IPX and I didn't realise about the NMAS updates, thanks.

I assume the post sp5 updates I need are the NSS patch and the updated server.exe?

I usually also apply eDirectory 8.7.3.8, but I see they've also released 8.7.3.9 which resolves some security issues.

Also, the SSP203 update is here:

Its possible that you may have problems also -- if you don't have the NMAS login methods setup correctly.. Go to your Security Container and make sure you see various items related to NMAS Logins...Otherwise you will have problems logging clients in (assuming you have NMAS installed and enabled on the client, which is default with 4.92SP2)
