You don't mention what SMS version you use. I have used SMS 1.2 to deploy SP2 for Windows 2000 with great success. I would create a new job (I assume you are already familiar with SMS) and where I enter the command line to use, I have it set to W2KSP2.exe -u -f -o.

this is simple.
extract the contents of the SP. your package will run update.exe from the update folder. Use UNC path in your package properties.
run update.exe /? to see what command line switches will work best for you.
I did this for 500 machines and had no major failures. biggest problem was lack of disk space on C
