server runs slow between 5am - 6am

hi

I have an IBM,7017-S85 - it has been over utilising CPU since 1 oct 07 between the hours of 5am and 6am, am increasing.

i am not sure how to figure out whats taking up sp much cpu

from 1 oct its utlised at 40% increasing now tp 90%

something is using up cpu - how do i find out what it is

The simple answer is to log in between 05:00 and 06:00 (in my case that involves staying up really late!) and running topas. This will immediately identify the culprit.

If it turns out to be Oracle, for example, you would then go to your DBAs and ask if they've scheduled in anything for that period. Meanwhile check your cron settings. An increasing number of files will increase the load imposed by the daily backup for example.

schedule nmon via cron to capture performance date between the times you interested in. this will create a file you can view in excel.
 
Check your crontabs, Do backups run at that time?

is there a tool which will cpature what process or application is using up resources.

we are having problems with load, load was in single didgit before we had to reboot the server

now after the reboot its in double figures ie. 53.14 etc

we have not changed a thing just had to reboot.

the run queue in vmstat show numbers from 23 - 30 then drops this never used to happen

any ideas what i can use to see whats going on?
