We followed IBMs guide to the tee for this upgrade as follows ..

1. Upgrade system to Service Pack 3

2. Rebooted

3. Upgraded Disk0 to Dynamic Disk

4. Rebooted

System now hangs at the Windows starting screen with the progress bar halfway.

This is an extremely urgent situation .... any solution outside of a rebuild will be HUGE

IF we need to bebuild from scratch and restore from tape ... can someone outline the steps for me please? I want to make sure I have it straight as the server is 1000 miles away and we need to walk someone through it.

can they f8 into the advanced startup menu beforehand?
im assuming youve already tried last known good configuration in the f8 menu....

if so see if they can boot into safe mode, you're service pack install proabably jsut messed up...

if they can get into safe mode have them uninstall the service pack (assuming they selected to back up files for a rollback of course), afterwards you should be good to go
other wise you're probabaly going to haev to run a repair, which means still having to reload the system state from the tape backup
your data will remain intact though

hope this helps you

I looked for the link I could point you to but I couldn't find it on Microsoft's site. I blew up my workstation converting my boot disk to dynamic and while perusing the "Knowledge Base" came across an article explicitly saying NOT to have your boot partition as dynamic.

From the W2k Server CD, go to \i386 in a dos box and run" winnt32 /cmdcons" This will install the recovery console as a second option on bootup.
