hi there ,one of our support guys recently re-installed Sql 2000 on a remote machine. Now when we log on as user the server green arrow icon doesn't show? Also the server name does'nt show ont the right click it just shows \\. If we log in as administrator it shows as it should do. I have tried this
a. Having the server service run as administrator
b. running Sp_dropserver 'oldname'
then
Sp_addserver 'newname',local

Have stopped and started SQLserver on both occassions. Sql server is running ok , its just that our customer wants to know that the server is running when they connect remotely.Would a rebuildm help this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The icon you are talking about is the SQL Servie Manager. It's a seperate utility that doesn't have anything to do with the config of the SQL Server. Just remove the \\. and type in the server name.

I appreciate what you are saying and I have done this i.e taken the \\ out and entered the server name. The problem is if the user is logged off they have to keep doing this or if they choose to do a remote reboot this will also occur. Thus leaving us back where we started? Any ideas, could this be caused by personal edition being installed on windows 2003 server? I think this is what may have happened.

You could remove the SQL Service Manager from the startup group. SQL 2005 doesn't have the SQL Service Manager so there's no time like the present to get used to not having it available.
