Server not seeing domain computers

I have a windows 2000 server acting as the primary DNS on a domain. On the domain I have several servers and workstations. Now here comes the problem:

Workstations can see and browse to the Windows 2000 primary server.
The Windows 2000 primary server can not see the workstations in Windows Network in Explorer.
It can ping some machines by name and browse to some using \\computer_name in explorer.

I am boggled on the primary DNS not seeing the computers it is sending the dns information to.

opps. Forgot to add in that 90% of workstations are Windows xp, the others are 2000. All have file and print sharing on. Have tried turning XP firewall on and off. No other firewalls installed.

Don't confuse WINS with DNS.

If you try to ping a computer name only, this is using WINS. If you try to ping the fully qualified computer name (i.e. server1.domain.com) then this would be using DNS.

Do you have your server pointing to itself for DNS? Run ipconfig/all at a command prompt and make sure the DNS server listed is your internal DNS servers IP, and not your external DNS server.

DNS is pointed to itself. Name resolves with ping using the fully qualified computer name and just the computer name.

Yes. Everything is running on both computers

You probably have Netbeui over TCPIP disabled.

Wish that was the problem. Its enabled.

It'll take awhile after you turn off xp firewall if thats the problem. Leave it off for a day and see what happens.
