When I come in the morning the server is locked up (No screen and any response but the power still on). I have to restart it(by press the power button....). When I go to the event log after start up I have a error message that reads.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: EventLog
Event Category: None
Event ID: 6008
Date: 6:55:30 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
The previous system shutdown at 2:34:15 AM on 2/3/2001 was unexpected.
Data:
0000: d1 07 02 00 06 00 03 00 N......
0008: 02 00 22 00 0f 00 99 03 .."... .
0010: d1 07 02 00 06 00 03 00 N......
0018: 0a 00 22 00 0f 00 99 03 .."... .

Not sure.. the event ID is just referring to the fact that your server was not shutdown properly - (which you knew anyway !!)

Are there any other errors in the event viewer prior to it freezing? How long has this been happening - have you added/changed any hardware, SPs or anything since it has been doing this ?

hi welshguy,
this has happened since i instralled the norton antivirus corporation edit server version on the win 2k domain controller. But i am not sure are they related...
And there is only one error on the event log prior to it: win32time error. I dont think it is the cause. Any comments?
and thx alot for your reply.

notmen,

Not really a lot to go on here. NAV has been known to cause such symptoms in certain circumstances.

Are you running SP2 - if not might be worth upgrading.
But I think the first thing is to prove if it is in fact NAV causing the problem - remove or disable NAV and see if this fixes the problem. At least you will have defined the culprit - then check with symantec and see if there are any known issues. Then reinstall after Sp2 if you upgraded.

If there are no hardware conflicts the only other thing I could think of might be disk corruption or shortage of disk space. Try checking the disk for errors as this might cause problems in tandem with NAV.

Sorry not much to go on but might have hit lucky with my ramblings :) !!

If you get any more clues let us know - somebody might have seen this before.

Cheers and good luck !

I my be off the mark here......
Check your energy saving settings, under screensaver.
I have seen that it shuts down HD's and the system is unable to bring them online again.
Change the settings to never.

Hope this Helps

i will try out the methods mentioned above.
Thx alot for everyone!

Notmen,

I have had the exact same problem now for about 3 months.

Are you running any kind of disk copies overnight ?

The reason i ask is that ours crashes due to a large SQL disk to disk backup, which runs the server out of memory and resources. if the server isn't running with an array controller that will also give problems.

But like i said this will only be the problem with large disk copies.

Until now, my server locked 2 times. The first time is during the Norton antvirus scheduled full system scan. (Around 20GB). And the second time was just before the daily ntbackup. So i have no idea is it due to the lack of memory. I totally lost..........
Help......Let's work it out together.......i am trying to perform a scandisk as i am wondering there may be a bad sector on the system.

Try this batch file (.bat), it restarts some services and it can help to reduce/prevent problems with w2k servers if they are experiencing problems similar to yours (i.e. server locked up).
Here you go:
@echo off
C:
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
net sess /delete /y
net sess /delete /y
net stop Server /y
net stop Server /y
net start Server
net start netlogon
net start Browser
net start Schedule
net start Spooler
net start RemoteCMD
exit

Tell me if this helps.

Thx for your advise, but when should we run the batch file?
I found 2 bad clusters and replaced them automatically, but the files in the clusters are catalog files only, not the system files. Still obersving now.

HI.

In many cases, such problems are caused by hardware failure.

One of the first suspects are your SCSI devices and configuration -
Are you using SCSI or IDE???
Is there a proper SCSI termination?
Are you using the correct SCSI cables?
(LVD requires a special cable).
Are you using the correct drivers?
Are you using separate channels for tape and disks?
Are you mixing different SCSI technologies on the same channel?
Check both the channels of the disks and the tape device.

You should notice if this happens only at night/morning, it might be related to some backup done at night.

One option to consider ** ONLY IF YOU CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM IN OTHER METHOD ** is to clone (GHOST) the server disks to an IDE device and use it for a while just to see if this is a SCSI issue or not. But this will obviously degrade server performance and is therefor only for troubleshoothing.

Other hardware related issues are CPU overheating, bad memory modules, but other devices or drivers can also cause such hang.

About software issues -
What version of NAV have you installed?
What services is the server running?
Was the server infected with a virus?

Bye

hi all
I wonder i found the problem.
There were 4 times of server locked up in these few days, and most of them reported the unexpected shutdown during the server daily backup to tape drive. But i still cannt find the solution because the daily backup have been ran since 1 year ago and nothing wrong until i set up the norton antivirus corporation edition 7.5 server version.

The domain server is only act as a file and printer sharing as well as a Accounting Software server.

I have check the disks, no bad sector and virus. The disk being backup contains only data files and the backup time is arranged at midnight, so nobody is using or lock the data files.

Comments are appriciated
Thx

Just a quick question.

Did you install your agent for open Files on that system? Hope this Helps
