We are moving to a W2k environment from NT4 and merging domains. I have the option of putting exchange 5.5sp4 on either a PIII 866 with 1g of memory or a dual PIII 450 same amount of memory. Both have hardward raids. We have not found any info on which choice would provide the best performance. We have about 350 email accounts. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've always preferred to run Exchange on a dual processor box (currently 2xPIII-500 Xeon). When we move to Ex2K I'll be looking for a faster box, quad processor capable, although it'll probably only start with 2, plus 1GB ram. I have around 450 mailboxes at present and performance is pretty good on Ex5.5 SP4/NT4 SP6a, but I would expect 2000 to be a bit heavier.

Dual processors also give me fallback position if I lose one processor. I can boot to an alternate HAL and kernel to keep it running on one until I can replace the failed one (Compaq HAL utility).

I too recommend dual processors when installing Exchange.
