I am using my wireless laptop behind a wireless router as a server for a chat program I am developing...I can use the program just fine within my own network, but nobody outside can ping my computer. Do I have to connect directly to my DSL? or is there a way to get around this problem? My program takes a lot of code from the CSocket example in
VC++ 6.0 (Chatter and Chatsrvr). If anyone would like some more info on the program, includng code examples, to help me out I'll be glad to post them.

Thank you,

Brian

This is not a problem that you can resolve with the code in your application. It is a network configuration issue.

At the least, your router would have to cooperate in the solution. Also your provider might have to have your connection configured. Mostly they don’t allow dialup accounts to run server software.

You might try asking about this in a forum for your Operating System.

Some commercial routers also behave like a firewall. I know that my Linksys works this way. In order for a computer to be exposed to the outside world, I need to configure my router/firewall by forwarding all port activity to this computer.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help guys, I managed to make it work by configuring port forwarding on my router.
