Hi guys,

Quick question. I have one server running Server 2003 SP2 SBS. I have to add another server as this one is dying but I only have Server 2003 Standard. Will I run into problems doing a DCPROMO, like when you try to add an R2 server to a Server 2003 standard AD server and cant because of the version of the OS.

My goal is to build the new Server 2003 SP2, add it to AD and use the SBS as a backup. Will I run into issues or is there anything I should know??

Thanks for any info guys!!

You should be ok, but...you should upgrade the current domain.

1. Obtain "Windows Small Business Server 2003 Transition Pack" and follow "Windows Small Business Server 2003 Transition Pack"
installation instructions:

Hi..thanks for the reply. i actually decided to create a new AD domain and scrap the sbs version and go to Server 2003 R2 standard. this is a small LAN, one server and 3 PC's so to create a new domain and user accounts isnt that difficult or time consuming. Thanks again...

You won't run into problems with DCPromo. But I need to know: how is your existing server "dying" and what sorts of things do you plan to offload to the new server?

Exchange will have to stay on SBS, and some of the key AD roles will need to stay as well.

When you say "use the SBS as a backup" do you mean use it to run backups, or something else?

Well like I said, I decided to scrap the SBS and go with Server 2003 Standard R2. Right now this is a small dental office, no exchange (yet) and the server is just a file server right now and also for the database that is used for their app Medimms (dental software).

I spoke with the Medimms people and they are going to move the database from the old server to new via remote session, so all I need to do is drop in the new domain and make sure both domains see each other to copy the database. I’d rather start fresh too, because like always the last “ tech “ hired had no idea what he was doing, left no documentation and no maintenance was done in over 3 years. So, it makes sense to me to scrap the old, shitty domain and go new…

Fresh start is ALWAYS good.
