Hi,

I need a suggestion on how to do this:
Scenario:

We need to transfer data from an Old server NT 3.51 currently being used as a Domain COntroller.
The data should go to the new Server which is a Windows Server 2003.

I was trying to install AD to the 2k3 server but then I got the point where it's saying that Windows95 and NT4.0 or earlier will not be able to join the domain.
I dont need anything from the old server except for the files in it.
How should I go about doing this? I hate to install AD right now if I would end up having a problem accessing the old server.

Any suggestion would be greatly apreciated.

thanks.

The easiest way is to setup FTP on either machine and ftp whatever files you need over. You could also burn CD's if you have a burner to spare.

You need to do two things:

1. Reset permissions on the files on the old 351 server before you try transferring them. "Everyone" is probably a good choice here! If you don't you may find that some files are inaccessible off the new server.

2. Connect to the old server from the new - use \\oldservername\c$ - if you're prompted for a user ID then make sure that the user ID includes the domain name eg OldDomainName\Administrator and, obviously, the password!

Copy away!

hi,

thanks for the replies.

Will I not have any problem accessing/connecting to the new server since this is a 2003 server and the other is a much later version of NT?

Use the 2K3 server to connect to the NT3.5 machine not the other way around, you should have no probs then.
