Hi there, had a problem last week with our single 2003 server. Came in one morning and could not log onto the console it gave an error message stating that the netlogon service was not running. After a fair amount of head scratching we ran the install disk in repair mode, and this worked allowing us to log back onto the server again. However - since we've done this, the clients are having random network problems. Approximately every 30-45 minutes the network connection to the server will just freeze up for around 1 or two minutes, then it will come back. While the connections to the clients are frozen, i can still use remote desktop to log into the server and move through files and folders with no problems. I've updated the network card drivers as i'm sure it must be something to do with this but i'm stumped! My next step is to put in a new network card but i'm not sure this will really help!

Any suggestions would be very useful!

Thank you

Do any errors appear in the Event Viewer? Also, have you forced your speed/duplex on both switch and server network card to the same to avoid confliction?

On top of what the TheLad has already indicated, I have had netlogon issues or slow netlogon response being caused by a problem disk. Although a chkdsk worked for me, the problem re-surface upon logon.

Thanks for the comments, the server is running on a gigabit hub and i've tried changing the settings of the network card from automatic to 1000mbs, and also tried setting it at 100mbs but that had no effect on the problem.

I've also tried running a chkdsk but it doesn't seem to find anything wrong. I've noticed that the server has now started to re-download automatic updates that it had previously installed. Does the act of running the repair from the server CD remove the updates, and could there be some kind of issue where some newer files have been replaced with older ones from the cd?

No i've not - as soon as i read that comment it seemed like an obvious point! I'm going to do that and see if it helps!

Thank you!

From what I recall if you use the Windows boot disk to repair the OS then it will overwrite the registry with the version of the registry for a fresh install. This would explain why it thinks that it hasn't applied all of the older service packs and such. The registry doesn't contain information about them being installed.

That said I haven't looked for proof on the net that I am remembering correctly.
