Serial Communication using C++

Please help someone....
I have just started learning C++ with the intention to move onto Visual C++ and I have been asked to find out how to send characters using C++ out the serial port and receive data back again. My knowledge is very limited and I have found nowhere offering me a simple tutorial/guide as to how a setup a simple program to send data out of the serial port and receive it (and possibly display it on monitor) - please help asap
