Hi all, here's an interested issue I'm having with backup exec 11D and a Quantum Autoloader 3 Library.

I have set the unit up to run in sequential operations mode as my scsi card does not support multiple LUNs. The unit itself works fine, as in I can read and write data with no issues. However, problems occur when the tape currently in the drive becomes full, in seq mode the autoloader should automatically load the next tape and allow the operation to continue, but all I get at the moment is a 'drive full' warning, and the operation gets suspended.

Any ideas?

I can confirm that i have 'started' sequential operations from the autoloader menu.

Many thanks in advance, your help will be greatly appreciated.

No the library must be set to random mode for Backup Exec or any other application to move to the next slot. This has nothing to do with LUN settings on the SCSI card.

Hi Steve,

Random mode wont work with my hardware, with a single LUN, the robotic library isnt visible at the application level. So in either case I have no control of the library through backup exec. Sequential mode on these autoloaders **should** keep cycling tapes, one after the other, until you tell it to stop, a dumb mode, of sorts. Basically, whether in random or sequential mode, im still at square one! ;-)

Can you set your autoloader to where it is not using LUNs? Instead, you should be able to set one SCSI ID for the tape deck, and a different SCSI ID for the robot.

LUNs are only necessary when you've run out of standard SCSI ID adresses.

The SCSI controller you're using is not involved with any sort of RAID, is it?

Sequential mode only works with "dumb" software that is merely coying files to tape and is not monitoring the status of the deck.

Then you have been sold the wrong hardware is its misconfigured. You should be seeing a Medium Changer and Tape drive in windows explorer. If you dont then again you hardware is not setup correctly. If you SCSI card doesnt support multi-lun then your never going to get it to work. Its not backup exec. I have never heard of a SCSI card (Adaptect 29160 or 39x serial) not taking a LUN device.

If you have our library attached to a RAID controller then that wont work either.
