I have just installed the demo ver of exchange 2000 and am attempting to setup a system where I can limit certain users to emailing only within the local domain, yet allowing the rest (approx 35 users) to have normal email. I understand MX and A records and will have no problem setting that part up, but is there a way to specify in exchange 2000 that a user is only allowed to email within the local domain?

Thank you for your time,

when you create an SMTP Connector (to deliver internet e-mail) you can set Delivery Restrictions for the connector so that only specified users can use it.

Hope this helps.

pardon my ignorance in exchange issues... but where do I create a smtp connector?
Thanks

Look for Routing Groups | <location> | Connectors. A Right-Click | New inside there will allow you to create one.

(NB you may only see the Connectors node ... the ones above are shown is you have more than one routing group.)

oh ok, thanks, found it.
I still have a lot to setup I guess, I didnt even have a connector setup, basically I just have the basic install done, and am starting to flounder my way through all this.

how many exchange servers do you have? in how many locations?

to create an internet mail connector ... slect the New SMTP Connector ... select either 'Use DNS' or 'Forward to Smarthost" (used if you have a virusscanning server). on the address space tab 'Add' smtp with '*' as the domain. This will allow you to send external e-mails. Also on this connector you'll be able to set up the restrictions you want.

Hope this helps.

thanks again, I know I have a lot to learn on this, (as if I didnt have enough on my plate these days at work :) ha)

I only have one mail server, we are currently using an external 3rd party hosted pop3 server that we would like to get away from altogether.

because you only have one mail server then the only connector you will need to make is the SMTP one (to delivery external mail. Moving away from you ISP mail 'should' be easy ;)

Just get them to change the DNS MX records so they point to your exchange server (or firewall / virus scanner if you have them). The only thing you need to do on your exchange server is to create a recipient policy that has the domain name you wis to recive for. E.g create a policy that adds @mycompany.com to all the users. With out a policy then exchange won't accept mail for that domain ... (as a note the policy doesn't have to apply to any users it just has to exist and contain the domain name.)
