Hey all,

This is what im trying to do. Im networking two computers via a cross over cable (no other connection is coming in, including the internet). I have installed sendmail on computer A (well when i say installed it came on red hat). Now what I want to do is send an email from computer B by telneting to computer A and entering the raw smtp commands (helo, mailfrom etc) and then checking computer A to see if it has received the email (by opening it in gedit or whatever, or will i need to use a mail viewer to see it?). That is what im trying to do, can you tell me if this is possible?

Thanks.

Oh and btw. Computer B cannot telnet to Computer A the connection is refused. Computer A can telnet to itself (localhost) and connect with the sendmail daemon however the daemon doesnt respond to any of the protocol commands like helo, it just stays blank. Computer A can also only seem to connect to its smtp daemon when telneting to localhost and not with its eth0 IP address. Any ideas whats up?

Thanks

I have had a bit of success. I can communicate with the daemon now and get the mail queued for delivery. I can then check the /var/spool/mqueue dir to view the mail i sent.

The only problem im having now is that the connection is refused when i try to connect to the daemon from outside the other computer and I dont know how to get round this. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like this is a firewall configuration issue. Assuming this is RHEL, use the 'system-config-securitylevel' tool, as root, and check the SMTP box. Alternatively, you could modify /etc/systemconfig/iptables by hand.
