Good afternoon,

wondering if anyone here has seen or know what would cause this.

sending mail was working fine last week on this new test machine im building to become our new mail server. I could send to both outside and inside my domain (cant get mail to come from outside, or from a user to this machine, but that is another problem, and unless anyone knows a quick one for why mail goes out, but dosent come in, please disregard for this thread).

Now from one day to the next (bit decay?? *smile*) when i try to send mail i get the following back on my command prompt after doing 'mail user@domain.com <testmail'

May 6 10:08:32 vala sendmail[1293]: [ID 801593 mail.alert] i46H8VJC001293: Losing ./qfi46H8VJC001293: savemail panic

suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you for your time

Looks like a permissions prob. w/ the mail queue

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

Had already done that, and verified that they were both ok:

/var/spool:

drwxrwsr-t 2 daemon daemon 512 Mar 25 14:54 calendar
drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp smmsp 512 May 6 10:08 clientmqueue
drwxr-xr-x 4 root sys 512 Mar 25 13:20 cron
drwxr-xr-x 2 uucp uucp 512 Mar 25 13:20 locks
drwxrwxr-x 5 lp lp 512 Mar 25 13:29 lp
drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 1024 May 6 10:08 mqueue

Do you have a postmaster alias in your aliases file ?

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

U can check postmaster with sendmail -bv postmaster

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

the only reference to Postmaster is the following line:

MAILER-DAEMON: postmaster

close to the top of the aliases file. I took this aliases file from our current mail server, and put it onto the new test mail server instead of re-creating it.

%^*^#@$%@%, could I have damaged something by doing that?

if necessary i can go back and restore the old aliases file, didnt even think that this would have been the problem....i was going to blame it on 'bit decay', but now looking back, im not sure if my problems started before or after i pulled the aliases file from our current mail server.

if i add any other reference to 'postmaster' in the aliases file, and run 'newaliases' i get an error "duplicate entry"

thoughts?

thanks again for your time RK, much appreciate the input/insight

try adding this to your aliases file:
postmaster: user
where user is a valid user on your system so that returned mail can be delivered to a legit user.

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

then run sendmail -bi to rebuild the aliases.db

Cogito Ergo Sum - Non Compos Mentis

No complaints from running 'sendmail -bv postmaster'

appreciate the input again too sir, im New(er) to Unix and new to sendmail all together. I have been building and working closely with sendmail for going on 3 weeks now *cheers*...and im understanding it for the most part. at least the familiarity of where things are, permissions, and some of where to look in the case of problems.

and your patience is certainly appreciated. let me know if you want something spacific, and ill c/p it

-java

Still seeing this problem, and any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Thank you for your time

I have replaced the /etc/mail/aliases file with the original from the install. stopped and started sendmail again, and still seeing the following on sending mail:

# May 13 10:49:35 vala sendmail[4825]: [ID 801593 mail.alert] i4DHnZWe004825: Losing ./qfi4DHnZWe004825: savemail panic

im way lost on this one, and any suggestions would be appreciated.

thank you all for your time

UPDATE and still could use some help on this:

It looks like I had an issue with my sendmail.cf file.

BEGIN:

# date | ./sendmail -Am -v andrews@statenet.com
Warning: .cf file is out of date: sendmail 8.12.11 supports version 10, .cf
file is version 0
root... aliased to root@statenet.com
/dead.letter... Saved message in /dead.letter

END

once I brought over a new /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file, stopped and restarted
sendmail, i didnt get that same error on sending mail. BUT, i did manage to
now get another error even though it completes. after tailing /var/log/sysl
og this is what i found:

BEGIN:
May 18 10:18:44 vala sendmail[7414]: [ID 702911 mail.notice] ruleset=check_r
elay, arg1=localhost, arg2=127.0.0.1, relay=localhost [127.0.0.1], reject=45
1 4.3.0 Temporary system failure. Please try again later.
May 18 10:18:44 vala sendmail[7413]: [ID 801593 mail.info] i4IHIiTV007413: t
o=user@domain.com, ctladdr=root (0/1), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mail
er=relay, pri=30106, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred
: 451 4.3.0 Temporary system failure. Please try again later.

END

am i just compiling my problems? thank you again for your input, this has be
en a fun one lemme tell ya....

appreciate your time
