Sending and Receiving Externally but NOT internally

The MTA stacks service would not start so I have removed and reinstalled the SMTP protocol, all is now started and external email is getting somewhere but we are not receiving anything at all internally. I have run an integrity check on the database and I am running out of ideas, the event log has nothing useful in it at all and I have sent emails internally to test and then tried to track but they are not even being found....
 
U might also wanna take a look at recipient policies. Is your external domain same as internal? Mine are different, and therefore have a recipient policy for both.
 
Check the SMTP queue - you may well have a loop created for remote delivery of local address. If so, delete the connector. (I've seen this before!)

I managed to get this all working again by deleting the connectors for SMTP and POP mail and recreating them.... thanks for all of your advice though!
