Under the Select Items to Backup, I am not able to select the files or folders to backup. All the file names or folder are gray out or shadded out. What are my options? Thank you very much for any suggestion.
Thanks for the response. I installed the remote agent from the server and it said successfully installed; however, when I looked at the client computer, I don't see the remote agent there. Do I have to restart the client computer? How do I know if the remote agent is installed properly since when I installed, the installation wizard said it was successfull but it doesn't work?
Again, thank you for your help. I restarted the client computer. I went into the Add/Remove in the control and yes, this time I see that it's installed there. However, I still wasn't able to select any items to backup. All the files or folders are still gray out.
Yes, we have license to install the remote agent. It's not a desktop but an NT 4.0 server with service pack4 installed. In addition, we're not even backing up an Exchange server. We don't have one.
About the registry tweak, is it safe? I mean as far as security goes.
I have the exact problem. I have been on the phone with Veritas for hours now with no resolution. Registry edit does not allow me to connect to any remote agents. I have pushed out the agents from the console as well as installed locally from the command line. Server and remote agents are Win2K.
sbilak, I assumed you're able to see all the selection items but they're just all inactive or shaded out, right? Are those folder or files you're trying to select for backup shared or not?
Only shares are available. I can not see the c$, additionally the system state is greyed out. I am told that this means I can not communicate with the agent.
I log on as a user with domain admin rights. This account has been added to the local administrator group on the remote machine. I have also selected "deny" under the Apply Group Policy, in AD for this user account. Of course I am logging in to the backup server under this account.
At this point I am loosing confidence with this product.
Forgot to tell you that I when I run telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xx 10000 from the command line I get the special characters indicating I can communicate with that server over the default ndmp port.
1. Can you ping the remote server by NETBIOS name from the backup server and vice versa?
2. Are you able to map the C$, D$ and Admin$ from the backup server to the remote server?
3. Are these servers on a VLAN by any chance? If so, the same one or different ones? You may need to look at the configuration of the VLAN, as I have seen posts from here and the Veritas newsgroup where this has been the issue - something about being able to send data to the remote server, but something on the VLAN was stopping communication back.
I don't think in this situation there is anything wrong with backup exec, it is an environmental thing.
The problem has been corrected. If the remote server would recieve a logon script from the Primary DC, I would be able to connect from the other DC connection would fail. Actually we had a problem with AD replication. Running DCDIAG indicated the AD was failing due to frssysvol errors. The File System Replication service had become corrupt. I wiped it out on the suspected bad DC and restarted the service. The DB was created and AD problems were solved.
Veritas is now able to connect to all remote servers.
