I'd like to create a selection of multiple objects in a layer. I.e if i have rasterized text in a layer, or perhaps a combination of shapes.
From this point I could fill all the shapes at once, apply a gradient, a stroke, etc.

In Photoshop the way I do this is holding CTRL and clicking a window in the layers dialog--is there a way to do this in GIMP?

Thanks!

GIMP is purely a bitmap editor, so there's no such things as objects; each layer is simply a set of pixels. The operations you want to perform only apply to vector graphics, which is supported by other programs such as Inkscape or OpenOffice Draw.

actually I figured out what I needed--alpha to selection, that accomplished what I wanted.
