Seeking recommendations on 3rd party backup and partioning software for desktop, workstation.

Partitioning software: PartitionMagic, no questions asked.
Expensive for a one off job, but indispensable if you are doing PC support professionally.

Re backup software, it depends on how you want to do your backups, what media you want to use to store your data backup on etc as to what is appropriate.

Yeah I do it part time professionally, finally growing to the point where I need the more advanced tools.

I heard Partitin Magic was the De Facto, but wanted the tek-tip guru's advice.

As for backups, it will be for workstations, home desktops, and backing up customer data prior to any major system work if needed or requested. It will ,at this point primarily be cd-r,later to dvd. What is this "Re backup"you speak of in your post.I was thinking of Norton Ghost for some imaging, what do you think.I have a relative that keeps destabilizing his win98 box, and im thinking of doing a imag on cd-r for him so hell leave me alone.

Thanks.

As the fellow person has posted partition magic is one just get it the best and it does exactly what is says on the box.

As far as backup software goes. It all comes down to what you are going to back up. There are so many pieces of software out there some of which are better suited to different jobs.

Ghost is a great product although I use a lot in my job. It best used for backing up disk/partitions. To that end it best uses is for creating images to allow quick and easy way to build/rebuild a pc. If this is what you wish to do then this is the best choice. (That’s what most people I know use it for)

If on the other hand you wish to back only certain files up. Then you would be better looking into backup software. Depending on the amount and regularity of use depends on the software you should get.

Arcserver is good but expensive then there’s backupexec, tapeware as well as others the previous two I have not used much so I am unaware of there strengths and weakness. Arcserver is one of standard back programs used. But like most off them it has its only little quirks. I do not have one product I could recommend. As there are some many out there. Especially if you are not after an expensive backup system.

From what you have posted ghost would seem the most suited. You can set ghost up to creat bootable cd which would make it easy to for your family memeber to re build his machine.

On the other hand you could start ccharging him maybe that would stop him from breaking his machine.
