I have a database split into front end and back-end applications.

Both have the shift-key locked down, though I am not using the built-in Access password system.

The databases are reasonably secure, but in testing, a friend used Excel to open and view the back-end database.

Is there any way to prevent this?

The only way to prevent the "external" pulling of information from an Access MDB is to use the "built-in Access password system". Sorry.

The only other way I can think of is to encrypt the database (one password for the database file). Tools->Security->Encrypt/Decrypt Database --
