I have a friend that has installed two D-Link security cameras in his home and now when he opens IE or Firefox he only gets “Page cannot be displayed” in spite of being online. He can send and receive e-mail just fine, he just cannot surf the net. He told me that he installed the cameras and assigned IP addresses for each one. I really don't know much about it so if someone can give me a heads up on where to start I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Hmmm.... that sucks... :)

Never seen that one before.

what kind of software is installed for virus/spyware protection? Spyware cleanup is a pain, takes forever, and there's no garuntee that'll fix it, so a rebuild may actually be quicker and a more sure fire way to go.

ok two things to try before rebuilding.

repair winsock

open the command prompt enter the command.
netsh winsock

you must restart after running that command. It's worth a shot, but I doubt that'll work.

Also, you can try re-installing XP service pack 2. That trick has worked wonders for me in the past, though the only way to do that without an internet connection will be to download it on an other computer and put it on CD or a network share. here's link to the download page.

It's not the quickest solution, but it won't hurt the computer at all, and it'll rebuild many of the services and dll files required for internet access.

I'm not sure what else to try, but if I think of anything I'll post.

Hope this helps

Good Luck!

Chris

I'll try SP2 first and let you know.
Thanks

Well, I tried reinstalling SP2 and zippo. I then tried netsh winsock but added "reset" to the command and voila... surfing is back on both Fx and IE. The IE error has dissapeared as well.

Research indicated that it might be the fault of a download accelerator so I uninstalled the only one I could find but I do not know if that has made any difference.

I also installed Ad-Aware and Spybot and got rid of a bunch of crap (she needs a lesson in sensible surfing).

I also downloaded Windows Defender but get an error when trying to update it. "0x80004002, no such interface supported". If there are any thoughts here send them on.

Thanks Chris et al!!!

whew... :)

Glad to hear that worked for you. Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I've been slammed at work.

Regaurding the windows defender problem. Have you completed all of the windows updates? Specifically, I'd like to make sure Windows Installed v3.1 is installed and all of the DCOM updates.

I keep thinking about this one and let you know what I find.

Hope this helps

Good Luck!

Chris

Cheers Chris:
