Securing W2K3 SMTP Service

Hi to all.

Someone knows some tips to secure the Microsoft SMTP service?

The options the can configure not satisfying me... to much poor.
I want to limit bad command tentative, block IP that attempt to connect many times, and more...

Some suggestion?

Really you can do this only via a firewall. As far as I know Exchange isn't sophisticated enough to do this.

Some things I can try via firewall, some other not...

Maybe exist some third part SMTP engine... I want to set up a relay server as front end of my Exchange.
