I want to add an additional dns server to my network (3) 2003 servers, and 40 pc's, and eventually take the old dns server off line. The old dns machine is the primary dns with forwarding, so could I take the new machnie and add it as a secondary server, with forwarding and eventuall shut down the old server?

u surely can, u may set up the new DNS as secondary zones of old DNS, after repl over, make those Zones AD-interated, then decommission old DNS, pointing all clients to new DNS, that's it. if u don't implement DHCP to change DNS automates, then u may use

netsh to manuuly change DNS settting on those PCs into logon script.

Why not add the second server to the domain, and on the old dns server setting make sure that it is set to update all dns servers on the domain.

Then add the forwarders to the new dns server.

If your clients get their DNS servers settings from DHCP modify the scope option to reflect the new server as the primary.

When the users login they will have this.

Disable DNS service (do not remove yet) on the old DNS server to make sure that this worked.

If so remove DNS from the old server.

Easier than configuring secondary zone.
