Second to none"

Now, that's a grating phrase.

Second to the guy who came in 1st !!!!!

<Do I need A Signature or will an X do?>

I don't have anything against the phrase per se. It's just been overused -- as I recall the phrase nulli secundus appears in 2000 year-old Latin texts.

OK shouldn't the question be "Second to whom?"

I was taught a simple trick to determine when to use Who vs. Whom -

Answer the question with He or Him

If the answer is him - use whom - ie the answer is this case would be "Second to him", so "Second to whom?" is the proper question.

If the answer is he - use who. For example, "Who is second?" would have the answer "He is second".

Yes.

But, "second to who?" keeps the sarcasm intact.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone commented on the title.

keeps the sarcasm intact - Good one.

I guess it was beneath you to make the coment?

Say it aloud, CajunCenturion. It works best that way. Have you read any Elmore Leonard?

I find it amusing when users wait, even thought they have an early opinion, and analyse all posts before they come up with a big picture analysis of the situation based on all then data they were presented.

I liken it to turning your test to the teacher after you were able to look at the tests everyone else turned in..

The brave poster jumps right in and engages in the discussion and exposes their weakness (IMHO).

Sorry, brutal honesty laced with a mild lack of tact is my mea culpa!

No, I have not read any Elmore Leonard. Any suggestions?

Nothing wrong with brutal honesty, but I think my posting history speaks for itself.

And MikeBarone pretty much summed the characteristics of many of your posts. To be brutally honest.

Guess I stepped right into that tag team match. Oh well.

Those that learn from what they read are wiser as a result. Those that don't, aren't.

It is all about learning, that is all.

Does "Second to none" mean "First"?

>Dimandja,
wasn't ti suppose to be Second to WhoM?

ZZ, The answer to that question was covered at the beginning of this thread. Check it out -- and wear a flak jacket... things got a bit explosive...

I see:
>I was wondering how long it would be before someone commented on the title.

I usually wait if I think I am right but not 100% sure and affraid to be laughed at if I was wrong. I would say it is an honest answer to why most people wait...

>keeps the sarcasm intact<

Exuse instead of saying...Oops, my bad???

>Exuse instead of saying...Oops, my bad???

My answer was: "But, 'second to who?' keeps the sarcasm intact."

I probably should have had written: "Second to... who?"
