I've installed and formatted a second hard drive on my new computer. Nothing is on the hard drive yet. The OS is XP Pro. Somewhere along the line, I messed up (I'm a novice!). The drive is in dynamic format vs basic format on the first drive. What's the difference? I want to partition the second hard drive, but can't figure out how. Help?

Doesn't matter if your drive is basic or dynamic, dynamic is used if you wanted to set up software mirror or striping. go to administrative tools in control panel, and computer management, then go to storage, then disk management, drives should be displayed in the right window, right click the unformatted drive, and select format.

The drive IS formatted. I want to partition it. I don't think I need it dynamic, do I?

you have to partition it before you format,if nothing is on the drive, open help and look at converting the drive from a dynamic to a basic. then instead of formating the whole drive, partition the drive to the sizes you want and format each individually.

Thanks rclark! I figured it out.
