Back in the good ole days of Win XP is was no problem to search for a computer on the network. Just click search and your search options were below.

It appears to me that Vista doesn't have the same functionality, but maybe I am missing it. Does anyone know how do search for a computer in Vista?

on my vista i went to network and my other pc showed up. i didnt do a search or anything like that, as long as the other pc is set up. i think thats what you was asking...

Halcomps,
From memory;
It'll show up if it is already listed in the list of computers on the master browser in the network; that can take some time after a connection has actually been estabished with a computer.
I believe that a search for a computer on XP would find a computer on the network regardless of whether it was listed (yet)in the master list. Possibly updating the master list as it did so.
The master list is also not updated immediatly when a computer leaves the network. Searching on XP would then fail to find the computer despite it being listed in the Network neighbourhood WorkGroup.

Puck,

I just tried this and it appears to work..

Try entering \\ComputerName into Internet Explorer

Hugh
Your right on ...there not always in the master broswer list.

Searching for the computer with \\ComputerName will work with Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer & Run

Thanks everyone for your help

I just go to "Start" then Search and type \\ thats it, and it brings up all my shared machines on my network.

Cheers
Rob

The answer is always "PEBKAC!
