I have been trying to find some information about the search entrys that we all enter in the search/ address bars of any search engine here we will use yahoo,as our example but can be any search bar I would like to know where are they all stored and are they on individual computers or on the net or on the yahoo system or site registry where abouts is it eg when i enter search words on this site it is there like a record where is it kept please help. malik

I'm pretty sure it's stored on the servers of the site which you are using. But I wonder because it seems like that would require massive server space and bandwidth. Especially for the yahoo example. I too would like to know for sure. Justin

I'm not so sure that EVERY query is 'saved' somewhere. If there is any record of it at all, I'd bet that as Osuman said, it's stored in some database on the search engines server. Now, I'm also betting that your actually talking about the 'autocomplete' function in windows. And your probably wanting to disable this for, ummm, 'Privacy' reasons. I don't have time to address how to disable this right now, but I'm sure someone else will...

I guess I was talking about the sites that Yahoo matches to your query, not the actual text you search for. As in, how does yahoo catelog all the web pages that it returns in a given query search. If it's the autocomplete thing you are talking about, those items are just stored on your computer, although they could be logged by the site too I suppose. Justin

In order for a website to turn up in a search, it must be registered with that company...such as Yahoo! Also, the web page must be designed using metatags in which keywords are inserted. Does this answer your question???

Alex

I don't think all the web page matches that Yahoo finds for some entries are all registered. I've seen some pretty obscure web pages that nobody would bother to register, much less have yahoo be willing to take. I think you have to register if you want your site to come up in the Websites category, but what about the 13200 webpage hits you get when searching for lava lamps? There are peoples random personal pages about lava lamps, why would yahoo give a darn about them and register their page? Are you sure there isn't another method that is used in addition to registering? Justin

Thank you all for different views, I am not sure if any of you are right because I feel that if I am searching for lava lamps on yahoo than the search entry I wrote is there for ever ie if I just type l in the search bar all entrys that begin with l i have asked for or searched will drop or open up now try to imagine if all of us had a-z quiries, searches we have made over the years and imagine how many people on hourly basis log onto yahoo do the servers have that large a capacity to store every one of the entrys we have made over the years I am talking close to five year old entrys just type the letter of alphabet from a-z and there it is I hope someone knows I am sure this websites the same way it has a search bar and similarly has all the entrys where are they on their server or my computer help malik

They are stored on your computer...Probably in a cookie but I am not sure. The history in you address bar can be cleared by clearing your internet history. Go to the control panel and double click on Internet Options and click on "clear history."

Alex

They are stored locally, if you go internet options ,content, autocomplete and clear the forms, refresh the search engine the previous entries will not be found.

To clear autocomplete

Click Tools
Internet Options
Content
Autocomplete

In here you can adjust the autocomplete behavior as well as clear the history (or just passwords).

This will prevent hitting any letter a-z and having your old search come up automagically.
