How do you add a search engine to a website? Is there a separte product that you can buy that will scan the site and input the data into a database, or something like that? We have a few websites that run on Apache (Linux) and IIS (Win2K) that we need to add seach capabilities. We'd also like the search engine to search .pdf files. Any idea's on how to go about this?

Thanks,
Chris

usualy search engines work on meta tags or database retrevial.... maybe if you are searching for pages and not specific info you could use the metatag idea Sometimes, when my code just won't behave, I take it outside and make it listen to britney spears music, and when it comes back it's really well behaved. I wonder if it's suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome now..

nix45, do you mean you want to add your URL to the search engines like yahoo and excite?? Well, if that's the case, go to and in the search field search for ADD URL, and from there submit your URL to a few meta-crawlers...that's the long process Forget the Nobel Peace prize, I just want to take over the world!! There's no single answer to how to add a search facility to your site. It depends on how big your site is, what kind of content you have, what facilities and skills you have and how much money you have/want to spend.

You can get commercial third-party products to install on your server to perform searching for you. There's several listed at

You can also find scripts to use and/or adapt at

Alternatively you can get an external search provider to index your site and provide a search facility. You either pay them to do so directly or allow them to display advertising to your visitors. An example of this approach is
Google offer both approaches to using their search technology in your site. See for details. -- Chris Hunt

Thanks. We actually looked into the Google appliance that searches your site, but entry level starts at $14K, which is too much for our small intranet site. To clarify things a bit, we're looking to add search functionality on our small intranet website that will search our HTML and PDF files.

I'll review the links above and see if I can come up with something.

I've encountered a somewhat cost-efficient 3rd party service for site searches. It's called Spiderline. Prices go from $50 to $600/year so depending on what package you choose, it could be a good deal.

Hope that helps.

To search your PDF files, you can use one of the free tools to convert them to HTML or text. You can then dump that converted text into a table in your database, along with a link to the associated PDF file.

When the user wants to search, you simply run queries on the converted text that's in your database, and next to each "found" result you have a link to the PDF file.

Catch my drift?
