Thanks in advance.I have a litle problem. It started last night i dont know why!If i double click on mmy computer and then try to open "c"drive or my cd rom's windows search companion opens up automatically and i cannot open the drive.Does anyone know why or what setting i have to change to let me in to my drives?

Please right click on your drive in "my computer" and check the default action Windows executes on it.

i see that if i right click on c drive the default setting is search.how do i change it to open.already tried file types but you cant change it there

Yes, you can change it there. In "File types", if you select a disc drive (I don't know with what name it appears on your XP, because I'm using a French version), you will see a button "advanced" where it is possible to define new actions to be taken on this item AND to define/change the default one. For a drive, there was no action foreseen like "open" or "find". I added "open" and "find" was added at the same time (?). I tried (and succeeded) in changing the default action to "find" for the object "drives"; the result was the search window on double-click. I reset it to "open" (with explorer.exe) and all went back as before. But I cannot understand how this default action can have been changed spontaneously.

i did it and everything is GREAT!!thank you very much!

Alphaphi,

I had this happen to me a few months back. Suddenly my Laptop would open up search whenever I clicked on the C drive. It was quite bizarre and I eventually resorted to wiping the computer. This was also a spontaneous change. If I remember rightly I was ok when I used it in the evening and the following morning it started hacking up.

Thanx for the advice you gave - have printed it just in case this happens again.

Catch you all later,
Blue

Hi,

Where exactly are you finding this "file types" command?

Thanks
