seagate dds4 tape drive

I am trying to configure a seagate dds4 tape drive. I have an Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI controller and have loaded the driver. I have run mkdev tape. When I boot the system I see the scsi adaptor and the tape drive, and I also see them when i run 'hwconfig -h'. If i try to access the tape drive (e.g. tar cvf /dev/rct0 *) I get error message 'no such file or directory'. The ID of the card is 7 and the ID of the tape drive is 2 as reccommended in the installation guide. Has anyone any suggestions.

You are trying to create a tape archive of the filesystem *.
How about tar tvf /dev/rct0 or tar cvf /dev/rct0 /etc or tar cvf /dev/rct0 /someotherfilesytem.

Or better yet, modify /etc/default/tar and change the default archive device to match the tape device listed. That way you can do tar tv or tar cv without definging the device every time.

try /dev/rStp0 as the device

try tape status to see if the tape drive is recognised and if it can see the tape.

Hi,
Have you correctly set jumpers on the tape ? ( under the device )
Default config for SCO is:
1=on
2=on
3=OFF
4=on
5=on
6=on
7=on
8=on
Dont forget to terminate your scsi cable.
