convert from varchar[100] type of SQL to number type(ToNumber does not work), this string contains number of days and time to be converted to date time

My database has the date as a string, formatted as yyyymmdd. To do a date calculation, I needed to change the string to a number, then change the number to a date.
DATE(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[1 to 4]),(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[5 to 6])),
(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[7 to 8])))
DATE(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[1 to 4]),(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[5 to 6])),
(ToNumber({Query.RECDATE}[7 to 8])))
