Hi all,

We have a Nortel Supernode Data Manager (SDM) in our lab that we are trying to bring up. However, we don't have any of the root username/password combos. Can anyone help us out?

Thanks, in advance.

You can reset the root password by booting the SDM to an SDM install tape
then going to maintenance mode then shell to get an AIX prompt.
- Issue the command "passwd root" to change the root password.
- Issue the command "reboot" at the AIX prompt to reboot the SDM so
you can login to the SDM normally (remove the tape). Let me know if you need
more details.

Thanks for the info DaveB4fun.

We have an old SDM install tape (titled "SDM 10 OS Tape").

I've tried booting from it by using the RMI on SP0 and hitting ESC to bring up the "FX-Bug" prompt. However, it will not boot from the tape. Below is a log of the SDM booting up, the pboot command I issued and error I received. The Tape Drive is in slot 2 and I have confirmed I have the address correct using the "ioi" command.

Am I performing the correct commands to boot from tape? If yes, can you shed any light on the error code received?

Thanks!
Derek

Derek,
The commands you performed are correct. Did you use a tape cleaner before inserting the tape. The tape can take a minute or so to read and will fail to boot if it has not read part of the tape first. Also, you could try the other tape drive and see if you can boot from it instead (after using a tape cleaner. I hope this helps. - Dave

Dave,

That did the trick! I used the tape cleaner about 10 times, then tried it. I'm in now with a new root password. Thanks!

Is there a way to remove the password completely, or is it required?

Thanks again!

Derek Stoparczyk

Derek,
Generally it would be easier to leave it alone. You can use this command to
set the password to not expire:
# chuser maxage=0 root
Also you should do an s-tape backup that will allow you to recover the SDM
in case a drive failed.
