Hi, I am a Computer technician and I would like to understand something related to System Development Life Cycle.

Let say if a client want to request for a system development or system upgrade from our company......for example by email:

1)Do we actually give them a quotation first or do we conduct a preliminary investigation first?
2)Usually do we make any charges for conducting preliminary investigation?
3)How long usually does it take to conduct preliminary investigation?

1 - I would not give a quote without detailed requirements. You can always make an initial reply that you will work for xx dollars per hour. This is called T&M or T&E work, Time and Materials or Time and Expenses. But I would not give an all encompassing quote without detailed information regarding the project.
2 - Generally, gathering the info needed to produce a quote (called RFP, Request For Proposal), is predominantly done by the company that needs the work done. The "bidding" company then asks questions to clarify the requirements so that a good estimate can be made.
3 - It varies. I've seen it done in a day or two, and I've seen several weeks. A lot depends on how well the company requesting the work can write its RFP and answer questions by the bidder(s) regarding that RFP.
