Scrolling background

I cant seem to find the solution to my problem. whenever i start to make a flash game and i click ctrl + enter and it comes up so you can test the video. However i got a code for a scrolling background but it wasn't what i was looking for. In that box and i move my character he moves off screen and i cant see him. I dont understand how to be able to see him so that he doesnt go off screen, so i can follow him.
Anyway i can do this?

Usually the character doesn't move... But the background does...
