I am trying to come up with a script that can be run periodically (via cron?) that would grep ps -A for Xvnc, and if it is not found, start vncserver.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, can vncserver be run by a user with less privileges than root?

Check these two threads from the scripting forum: thread822-537331 and thread822-509671.

the second one contains a star and quickly reading it makes me think the solution there is the better one because it searches for the PID, rather than the process name.

You may also want to check the FAQ in the scripting section to see if someone has come up with yet a different solution.
