I've been noticing that if I don't use the left click on the mouse for about 5 minutes, that the screen won't display anything I've been typing after 5 minutes, or it won't allow resumption of typing on to screen unless I click the left mouse button.
I use the LogicTec? track ball...have changed it, used a Microsoft mouse and something else ...3 change outs and still no fix....PC is running without any change in heat load...Hibenation feature disabled, power management set for like no stop, have run virus ck with Norton, and defender. Have brought pc to PC shop and it never hangs up there. Does anyone have same experience....it unlocks only when I left click on the mouse.....Looking forward to help and thanks

First...make & model, other specs of the system please.

So...even if there's activity going on like typing, scrolling with arrow keys, etc., after a set time (~5 min) the PC stops responding? And won't start again until you've left-clicked the mouse?

I always think activity like this is spyware, virus etc. Run the online scanners at Housecall, Panda & Symantec, as well as RootkitRevealer, Adaware, Spybot, and MBAM. Google the previous apps for links. Run everything you can, they are all free. MBAM in particular finds things that others do not. I would probably start with that (MBAM = MalwareBytes Anti-Malware).

It's running under 2000 XP 2 meg ram and is pentium 4 local brand which has been performing well for several years.
Will try those scanners and get back with you in a day or so...thanks for your prompt and courtey....Bob

It could also be a conflict with another peripheral plugged into the PC.

If it doesn't hang at the PC shop then we have a clue! What is different at the PC shop?

Did they use a different mouse? Are there any other things you usually plug in that were missing at the PC shop (printer, mobile/pda, scanner, USB ADSL modem etc)? Is the mouse PS2 or USB? It may be using the same IRQ as another device...... Or it might just be spyware!

Good luck with the process of elimination, and let us know when you get to the bottom of it.

Cheers,

Rob.

Oh, and I agree totally with Tony. MalwareBytes Anti Malware is superb.

Please make sure that you download the software Tony mentions from safe websites though. You could catch a cold if you don't! I recommend majorgeeks.com for all your freeware needs.
