Screen doesn't refresh 2

In folder "A" I have many subfolders ("B", "C", etc.) I noticed that when I rename "B" to "Q", it doesn't refresh the screen until I hit F5/refresh. Until I do so, it still displays the name of "B" - and if I try to open it, it scolds me that no such folder exists.

Is there a fix to get it to refresh itself? This is XP Pro - the latest and greatest, isn't it?

This was a popular tweak for 98.
It never bothered me enough on 98 or XP to try it, so do so at your own risk.

That's lookin' a bit scary for my tastes. I couldn't find anything on Microsoft.com - although I suspect I didn't search properly.

Anything more conservative? Like a patch from MS?

I haven't seen any patches, this is typical behavior of MS OS, though typically XP refreshes quicker from what I have noticed. What are your hardware specs? Does it eventually refresh on its own?

It's a new 2.2 AMD computer. 'dem specs? I'm not sure if it eventually refreshes - I'll have to check tonight.

Pressing F5 or not using the Explorer Pane view or updating to SP2 seems to be the Microsoft answer.

I have a similar problem. I have Windows XP Professional.
F5/Refresh and View/Refresh does not work and icons are left all over the place.
It is extremely nausious to have to go to the View menu and arrange icons by name, date, etc.
Anybody have any ideas?

You can make Windows Explorer constantly refresh and update its files and folder views. Go through the Registry through RegEdit, and navigate through the left-hand pane until you get to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / System / CurrentControlSet / control / Update. In the right-hand pane, click on UpdateMode and select Modify. In the Edit window, change 01 to 00. Exit everything and reboot for this to take effect.

Thankyou bcastner. Unfortunately, I tried this but it did not work. However, on Windows XP the Update screen is set to Hex and as such only allowed single character of 0 and 1. Thus, I changed the 1 to 0 and re-booted.
No change to icons when refreshing or executing the F5 key.
Any other advice would be most welcome.

Have you checked to see if there is an updated driver available for the video card?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

It is a DWORD value and admits up to 8 characters.

I was not addressing icon placement, this is not a Refresh function.
I was addressing Refresh in Explorer, the subject of this thread.

And in browsing network shares can cause a noticeable flicker on the display.

Unfortunately, what you see now is the middle ground. You will occasionally have to use the F5 key.

I agree with you that a file change notification event should be triggered more frequently, but it just is not. Some clues:

It is event driven and not time driven.
You can miminize this issue by not using Folder view in Explorer.
