Screen blanks in vfp9 running a legacy foxpro app 1

I have a legacy application started in DBase, finished in foxpro 1 and 2. Converted to Visual foxpro3.Mainly foxpro procedural code, not OOP. It ran in vfp3 forever (ok 10 years.) I recently upgraded to get rid of the 256mb memory limit. In foxpro 9 I get a random screen blank in a Screen (originally generated with Genscrn tool). Strangely, the screen contains a menu with "Browse" which calls a browse screen. After going into the browse screen and returning, the screen no longer blanks out.

Any tips where to look for the problem and possible solution (other than rewriting completely, that may be for next year). I haven't found anything in code, but I'm not a Visual Foxpro expert and can't be sure how all the old code would work in VFP9. Is there some environmental variable that the browse screen would change to explain the different action after using browse?

The first thing you should try is to disable themes. Put this code near the top of your main program:

_SCREEN.Themes = .F.
