Hello

I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop. Suddenly, when I boot up the system, screen does not work. Not even COMPAQ logo appears nothing. When I connect VGA output to a TFT screen its the same. Totally blank.

Power supply seems to be normal.Maybe is sthg wrong in the motherboard.Burnt chip or sthg like that?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Regards

If it's not working on the LCD or an external display, but you hear everything else working away, then my initial guess will be the display adapter/graphics card (probably onboard) is gone. Which would mean the motherboard would have to be replaced, or else just have to replace the whole laptop. Depending upon the age of it, it may just not be worth messing with.

But of course you can try some things just to see if some little quirk is causing it..

Perhaps something like this:
1. Turn off the laptop if powered on
2. Unplug from AC adapter
3. take battery out
4. Hold down power button for at least 10 to 15 seconds.
5. Wait a while yet - I don't know, go get a snack or run an errand or something.
6. Pop the battery back in, and see if it'll start up any different.
7. If not, I'd have to guess the original guess.

All of this is assuming, of course, that you've got your standard lights flashing on the laptop and/or you are at least hearing a fan and/or your hard drive being accessed.

You mentioned that you connected the laptop to another monitor and it still didn't work, however on some laptops the vga output doesnt always just come on when you plug in a monitor. On newer hp laptops, you hold down the fn button and press F4 to cycle through the different display modes. Look at the F* buttons at the top of your keyboard and look for one with a monitor or little screen icon on it. turn the laptop on and try holding the fn button and pressing the key with a screen or monitor on it (if there is one). This will usually enable the vga output. Hope that made sense.... This will help you determine if its a bad lcd or a bad display adapter. Good luck.
