Screeching problem with Transtalks

I'm having a problem with a Partner ACS system and a pair of Transtalks. The ACS is rev 5 (I think -- new 4~ years ago or so -- and the transtalks are refurbs from Metroline. Regular POTS lines, nothing fancy.

Here's the problem: When someone is on a call with one of the cordless phones and someone else calls in, that third party hears a loud screech. Like, very loud, to the point where it freaks them out. Again, user A is using a transtalk to talk to user B, who is in the outside world. User C calls in to the main line, which hunts over to line two, or three, and hears a very loud screech. User A also hears a little chirp indicating another incoming call.

We've already replaced the phones and the base station with "like new" ones from Metroline. The Partner system has been in use for years without the screeching problem. The only thing that's new is the transtalks. And the problem only comes up when the transtalks are in use. If somebody is using a partnerphone there is no screech.

What is going on here? I can move the transtalks to different ports, including on expansion modules, and the same thing happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try puttng them in seperate calling groups. I understand this has helped several.

If you have the transtalk set to ring, this will cause the noise that you are talking about.

You're saying they can't be set to ring, like at the switch? Or do you mean they should be on vibrate?

This hardly seems like good design. I'll try it both ways.

The worst part about it is that it doesn't always happen. Maybe 20% of the time. When you're sitting there trying to diagnose the problem it's very frustrating trying to duplicate the condition.

They are Transtalk 9040s.

Are both handsets on the one dual radio unit? I say this because if two radio units are used they must be connected together with a sync cable. This coordinates the frequencies used to prevent interference.

Older 9031's were "married" to their radio units and if more than one was used on the same premises they must be installed in a carrier which takes care of syncing the radio units.

9031's CANNOT be used on the same premises as the newer 9040's. Wonder if there is one or maybe some other type of transmitter within range?

None of the Transtalk radio units should be installed near the control unit.

What I would do is move the radio unit to another area temporarily and see what happens. You might also try another radio unit.

Thanks for your reply. The only cordless phones onsite are the two 9040s. They are both connected to the same radio unit, and the radio unit is about 2 meters away from the control unit. Is it still worth it to try moving the radio unit farther away?

Hi Rob,
It's easy to move the units away from the carrier to try this. Use a long network cable and plug it in, say 20', and try it again.

Yeah, worth a try but my gut feeling here is that you have a problem with the dual radio unit. I'm not a big fan of refurb, many times it is just gone over for cosmetics and basic operation. Intermittant problems such as this are exactly the kind of things that would not be found under those circumstances. If it's still under warranty I would swap it for another. I think you have reason enough to justify it.

Will try moving the unit far away, and if that doesn't help I'll try swapping it out again.
