The root account has become disabled so I want to boot from the emergency boot disk but the question or problem is as follows: The boot disk was created in 2001 when the system was delivered. I was not instructed to make any as we go like I should have been doing all along. In the mean time the system name was changed inadvertently when we were trying to do some network stuff. We do not know what we did to change the name, but I had to change a lot of things to the new system name which was easier than trying to go back and change back not knowing how it had happened. So if these emergency boot & root disks have the old system name what is going to happen or should I say not going to happen? Thank you in advance, I hope!

I have looked at the aplawrence posts and tried them It will not reconize the /mnt/bin/chroot /mnt

I have also tried the type tools at the boot prompt but with no success. It seems to me that the floppy disettes do not have every thing on them that I need.

When I use tools as bootstring I go to the normal install process. What I am missing ?

Oops, I tried that from a 5.0.7 boot CD, not a diskette.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Sorry, I've got the menu after choosing the CD-Rom device :~/
Unfortunately, mount /dev/hd0root /mnt, gives mount: Bad address error.
Probably a BTLD issue ...
Anyway, thanks Frederico and cdlvj for the bootstring.

ok.

after booting with the cd, typing "tools" on the prompt follow the screens until you have just gone past the keyboard selection.

at this stage, and at least with 5.05 CD I have (do not have the others at hand now), you hit F8.

You will then be brought into a Debug screen where you can select the "escape shell".

Go from there.
