I run Scheduler as a service by using the srvany.exe from the WinNT/2K Ressourcekit. By doing so I have experienced no problems so far.

Are you saying you run Cognos Scheduler as a scheduler ?

If so what version are you using ?

could you also provide more information on how you accomplish this.

I'm sure many people here would find this helpful.

Thanks in Advance

No I say that I run the Cognos Scheduler (7.1MR2) as a windows service by using a tiny tool called "srvany.exe".

Here you have some instructions and you can also find the files.
My problem was that the IT guys here tend to restart the server from time to time :). Now after every reboot the Cognos Scheduler is "online" and running. The Cognos Scheduler triggers various macros, which are recurrent.

Thanks I'll take a look at that

Gary,
If you don't want to use (or IT protocols forbid)a 'foreign' .exe program, how about just putting a shortcut to scheduler in the startup folder? Works fine for me and my daily-rebooted server.... [smile]

Thats what I do at the moment and now that I sit back and think about it I can't see any real advantages to kicking the Cognos scheduler off via a service.

The macros and scripts which are in the scheduler all require the server to be logged on and run on the desktop anyway.

At least it's handy to know this can be done.

Gary,
I guess the benefit to Scheduler being run as a service is if you can automatically restart following a failure and/or receive notification of a failure.

In my opinion the benefit of running Scheduler as a service is that no user has to be logged on after any reboot. The IT here does not want any user to be logged on. So this was the only solution for my case.

fuhbar,
Point taken, but then how are you passing Cognos administrator log-on to Access Manager for reports/builds?

drlex,

by integrating this into the macros:

- in case of Impromptu reports:
Set objAuthApp = CreateObject("Authenticator2.Application")
Set objAuthDoc = objAuthApp.Documents.OpenWithBasicSignon("NAMESPACE", "LOGONNAME", "PASSWORD", "USERCLASS")

- in case of Transformer:
Set objModel = objTrans.OpenModel (strModelSource, "LOGONNAME","PASSWORD","USERCLASS")

But be sure that the ".csa" file which refers to your namespace is set as default in the Access Manager. Otherwise the macro won't log on to the Access Manager.

fuhbar,
thanks; I'm wary of having user names and passwords visible in macros, so I'll stick with the OS sign on. I appreciate you need to satisfy IT strictures. I also use an .lae on my development PC.

drlex,
in our case the Cognos develop team only has access to the servers, so there is no problem concerning visible pw.

Have a nice weekend

Thanks, for all the great responses. Your input was very helpful. What I ended up doing was to contact our IT security people and asked them to create a user id and password and have it locked down to just the servers which Cognos Scheduler runs. Our IT people here also do periodic maintenance and reboot servers with out notifying the appropriate people. As for the "srvany.exe" located at
This would have seemed to worked but I have already taken another direction. Also, our servers usually do not have individuals continually login in so setting up the Scheduler in the startup would not have work for us. Again, thanks for everyones input.
