I have created an account with a password and also checked to see if the service is running - it is

When I try to schedule task it just hangs

Any ideas ?

Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really need to provide more information on what you are trying to schedule.

As a good general rule you will find that many applications will need to be fiddled with to run for a non-Administrator user.

If it is a service that you are trying to initiate or execute, you will likely have to edit your local policies to permit its execution by a non-Administrator. There well could be registry keys that are denied to non-Administrators unless you manually grant permissions to other users. There are folders that are denied to non-Administrators unless you grant the necessary permissions.

You need to fiddle if you are trying to schedule a task for non administrator users. One shortcut to the fiddling that can often work is to use the "Run As" feature to run the task as the Administrator even though a non-Administrator is currently logged on the machine.

There may be problems with the power model XP identified for your machine during installation.

1. Is the service running? right-click My Computer, Manage, Services, Services, and scroll to Task Scheduler and check that it is Automatic and started.

2. Is Advanced Power Management enabled on the machine? Control Panel, Power Options.

3. Are you part of a network or stand-alone? If standalone you may have to use the AT approach rather than the wizard.

You need to logon with a password for scheduled task wizard to run successfully. If you are auto logon because you are the only and administrator user, the wizard will stop responding.

I have logged on using my password for my account (I'm the admin)

Thanks

Perhaps XP is just broken. It happens.
Some additional hints (if not fixes) are here.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Will the Wizard run in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
