Not sure if this is where I should post. I was wondering if some of you could give some pro's vs. cons of scanning files to a local external hard drive that can be viewed by only sharing through My Computer/Windows Explorer? Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks

One con that I recently found out is if you will need more than 10 people at a time to access the shared directory you don't want to do it on XP. XP Home allows a maximum of 5 simultaneous users and XP Pro is 10. You would have to use a full "server" version (2000 or 2003) to get around that.

Otherwise there is nothing wrong with having a central data repository. You might want to limit the deletion right on the directory to be sure no one accidentally deletes your files.

Thanks donb01. We currently are using a Content Management scanning software, but we have some images that we do not want in there.

That software is running through a Windows 2000 box which allowed us to put a number of users in it.
