I have a box here running win 98 and just checking it out, I went to run scandisk.....I get an error that there is not enough memory to run it and to shut down other programs. I shut everything else down....same message.

I reboot in safe mode...same message and, of course, we know for sure nothing else is running. Same with Defrag....insufficient memory to run.....

He does not any AV programs, and I will probably get one and load it....but does any particular virus come to mind here? I checked for Nimda, Love, Code Red but no virus was found.

Dave,
2 things to try:

1) While in Safe Mode, CTRL-ALT-DEL and end task on everything except Explorer. Go into "Control Panel -> Power" and disable power managament. Also make sure the screen saver is turned off and no program icons running in the system tray.

2) Sometimes you can't see everything that's running. In Normal Mode, go to Start -> Run and type msconfig. Hit OK and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything (might want to make a note of what's unchecked already), hit OK, and reboot into Normal Mode again. After coming up, repeat step 1 except in Normal Mode. Should work this time. If it does, don't forget to go back into msconfig, recheck everything that was checked before and reboot.

Hope that gets you somewhere...

I had something like this. I re-installed Windows on top of itself.

Hey, I tried all that to no avail, except re-install over....so I will get a hold of a 98 SE upgrade CD and try that.

Thanks guys....

Jmatt hit it right on the head!

Earlier, I had taken a 4gb hd and ran symantecs' GHOST to clone contents to a 20GB HD. This is where the problem began.

So, I had to revert back to what I used to do several years ago.....connect new drive as slave, create the partition via fdisk and format the drive. Reboot and then in windows 98, start, run and entered 'xcopy c:\*.* d:\ /s/e/c/k/h/r' to copy all the files from old hd to new hd.

Then remove the master hd, set new one (was slave) as master and then go into fdisk and set the partition to active, reboot pc and viola! Done.

This is the first time I attempted to ghost a small hd to a larger than 8gb one.....

Thanks.....

i read jmatt's link to microsoft and it makes sense, however, it is nothing more than the big bad stealer of everyone else's creations cover for their screw-up. excellent post nonetheless. next time you might just try running scandisk from your win98 boot floppy. good luck. everyday you learn something new, the day you dont is the day you die....so make someone live longer teach them something.......MUTT

Also, for future reference--

This problem is because the cluster size on the hard drive is incorrect. If you have a copy of Partition Magic, you are able to resize them. This can be a long process, but is well worth it!!

Of course, back up any important data first just in case!! Mudskipper

Thanks guys......Yeah, but partition magic was never offered for free. ;)

Xcopy is free and Ghost (v5.1) was complimentary. Also, I know that Western Digital HD's (shrink wrap package) provides a driver and instructions for cloning the new drive from the old drive.....

But for me and in this situation, Xcopy fit the bill perfectly.

Thanks to all who responded, cuz most likely I would not have taken care of this as quickly as I did.....Yeah, my bad for not looking at the MS faq's. Have a good weekend y'all!

re free partition magic.
If you can find a copy of Mueller's upgrading and repairing cd's 11th edition, WITH the CD, at your library, it includes a que version of drive image and partition magic. I don't know what the differences are between these and the full products, but I do know they (QUE versions) work with win 98.
