My Parents are running XP Pro, no service packs installed.
Now for some reason autoroute stopped starting and causes the machine to freeze completely, requiring a actual repowering of the machine. I have ran scandisk on startup and it fails after 52%. Have tried uninstalling autoroute but that cause the machine to freeze as well.

Every other piece of software appears fine, although IE started to lock up on me occasionaly yesterday, which it has never done before.

I suspect that either the HD is on the way out or the are some bad sectors. Is there any free software out there that I can run to check the disk out other than scadisk

thanks

You should also consider the possibility of a CPU overheat, or even a memory error.

You could look in your bios and see if you have s.m.a.r.t feature. If so turn it on and save and exit.
s.m.a.r.t is a program that tells you the condition of your hard drive and warns when its about to fail.

If it fails consistently at that point (52%) then I'd say your drive has some bad sectors and is highly likely to be about to crash. Easy fix, get a new one, she's about to go.
