This could be a shot in the dark but here it is. We are currently beginning to use SMS in our company. We need to be certain that SMS is installed and running on all systems. I was just using a tool that scanned the network to see if theRPC vulnerability was still present and I am asking if there is anything available that we can use to scan our subnets to see if SMS is running on the systems. We have some users that rebuild their machines and logon to another domain and we would like to do a periodic scan to see if there are systems we need to re-install SMS on. Any help is appreciated.

A simple solution would be to run network discovery, (you state that users may connect connect to another domain, not network) Results will tell you if discovered devices are clients. You may want to make sure remote client installtion is not selected first.

hi,
if u mean Scan for RPC ( if the Machine are patches or not ) u can use the Tool from Miv=crosoft Web site...
U can scan for one Machine or Subnet...

Hope it's help

Thanks for the help, I was told about the network discovery after I posted. That, however leads me to another question or two. After the discovery ran it only showed systems from the subnet that the server is on. I checked in the subnets tab and all our subnets are enabled to be discovered. I had the network group watch the firewall while I did a discovery and they saw nothing drop.
Also, when I sort by client yes or no in the collection I see that my own system is listed as No for client. Everything is installed and working well on my machine so I am confused as to why it says there is no client. The more I go through the collections and queries the less I trust the info I am getting back. Any explanations are appreciated.

Going back to your original question, a slightly different way to see if SMS clients are installed is to see if they are running Remote Control. Since Remote Control listens on a TCP port you could use a port scanning tools to do this. FYI. SMS uses either port 2701 (SP2 and later) or 1761 (pre-SP2).

To answer your question on loading the client on different subnets, have you set these subnets up in the site boundaries? Right-click your site under "Site Hierarchy", and go to properties.
